Illustration

Here are some examples of my illustration work. I’m able to use a variety of different media in my work, but I find I get better results by using mixed media. It does depend of the project, though, as not all projects are created equal.

Mad Artist Dude

Mad Artist Dude (Ink, watercolor, and acrylic on 11 x 15 Strathmore 300 Series watercolor pad: created February 22, 2024) - Sometimes making art is a tough process. Many anguished screams and broken pencils ensue, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Mushroom Monsters From Outer Space (Ink plus collage element on 11 x 14 Strathmore 300 Series bristol board: created January 6, 2023) - This is a fun little idea that developed from a quick sketch I did on November 6, 2022. No rhyme or reason to it, except that it was the first thing that came to mind while sketching on that day.

Heatwave (Ink with watercolor on 11 x 15 Strathmore 300 Series watercolor paper: created June 10, 2022) - One of the unfortunate side effects of climate change is an increase in heat waves, and in Southern California, where I’m from, there have been an untold number of them. Being no stranger to the phenomenon, I had the idea that I would illustrate the sensation of experiencing a heat wave. The head of this strange little man is a stick of dynamite with a raging flame for hair. Little droplets on the surface of his face represent sweat.

Laughter is Good for the Soul (Pen & ink with watercolor, plus collage elements, on 9 x 12 Strathmore 300 Series watercolor paper: created March, 2022) - This was originally intended to be an Instagram post, and while I did post it, I also thought it was too good not to include in my web portfolio as well. Basically, it was an attempt to create something positive in the midst of chaotic world events.

Cranial Awareness (Pen & ink with watercolor: created July, 2021) - This illustration is a visual representation of mental confusion and overthinking. Being literally “scatterbrained,” the subject does have a redeeming trait - an awareness of the cranium, (which in this case is absent.) It suggests knowing there’s a problem, and knowing that help is needed.

Let’s Eat (Pen & ink: created August, 2021) - This illustration is a metaphor for greed and conspicuous consumption. The abominable appearance of this creature is a visual interpretation of what the souls of the greedy might look like. Foul, twisted, and misshapen, but ultimately not caring for anything except continuously feeding its insatiable lust for more.

36 Minutes (Digital collage: created September, 2021) - A creepy fact about hot dogs is that each one you eat reduces your life expectancy by 36 minutes. This illustration was inspired by that fact, and I created it to hopefully persuade hot dog eaters against this reduction. Meat byproducts might taste good and all, but there are better and healthier ways to enjoy oneself. At least I think so.
